Avoid Drunk Driving During the Holidays

12/9/2020

Comments

During the holiday season, we experience a higher number of DWI's due to a lot of people traveling  or just simply going to a family celebration. The more people that are out on the road, the higher the number of people driving drunk is higher as well.

To avoid getting a DWI, refrain from driving under the influence. Here are some tips on how to help avoid drunk driving during the holidays.
  • Designated Drivers- The holiday season is all about different celebrations, meaning there will be more than one event. A good way to avoid drunk driving is by taking turns with friends or family being a designated driver for that night. For example, your friend can be designated driver on Christmas Eve and the following night, you can be designated driver.
  • Uber/Lyft/Taxi's- If designated drivers are not really your thing, have an Uber/Lyft pick you and your friends up for the night to ensure a safe ride home free of DWI's. Even if the location is nearby, the risk of getting pulled over remains the same.
  • Stay Overnight- One of the most effective ways to avoid drunk driving is by staying over at the place of the event or somewhere near by where the party is at. Just be sure to ask in advance if it's okay to stay the night.
  • Drink Smart- If you are aware of the amount of drinking you are doing, it reduces the chances of you getting too drunk and having a massive hangover the next day, even if you are not driving. However, if you are driving, refrain from drinking too much or all together. Everyone's alcohol tolerance level is different, so one or two drinks can really harm you if you are pulled over.
Coming home safely to your loved ones should always be a priority. Here are C&A Towing we promote safe driving and will be there for any vehicle assistance you may need this holiday season. Thank you for reading! We hope these tips stick with you through the season!

Covid-19 Vehicle Precautions & Safety Tips

5/14/2020

Comments

As communities across the world take more and more steps to limit the spread of COVID-19, questions regarding which precautions are the best to follow are increasing. Now that more businesses are slowly opening back up, curfews and shelter-in-home ordinances are being lifted, there will be more people out on the streets and stores. This means, that the probability of contracting the sickness is believed to be even higher now. Roughly, it is currently in the hands of the citizens to take their own precautions and decide whether the risk of leaving home is worth the possible exposure to
COVID-19.

If you absolutely must go out, or simply are not concerned by COVID-19, it is still very important to practice safety precautions in public, not only for yourself, but for everyone around you as well. Here are a few safety measures you could follow, at stores or while driving, to do your part in decreasing any further spread of COVID-19.
Picture

  • Postpone any non-essential trips and tasks to minimize your exposure to others.
  • Using your vehicles' climate control to continually circulate fresh air throughout your vehicle. This actually helps in cleaning and reducing possible contaminates in your vehicles air.
  • Limiting the number of passengers in your vehicle. Practicing social-distancing is a great way to prevent any further spread. The less people around you, the better.
  • Following the point from above, if you do have someone if your vehicle, disinfect the seats, handles, or anything they could have touched after they have left.
  • Wash your hands/use sanitizer before and after entering your vehicle. This will ensure that there are no contaminates entering or exiting your vehicle.
  • Using face masks in public are crucial! Many businesses are actually requiring their employees and customers to use a face mask while visiting their business.
  • Wash your face masks frequently, if you do not dispose them, to ensure that no bacteria or viruses stay on it.
  • This applies for gloves as well. While wearing gloves, it is very important to not touch your face, eyes or mouth as there could be contaminates on the gloves as well. If you plan to reuse your gloves, please make sure to completely sanitize the gloves and your hands before and after each use.
  • Wipe down and sanitize the keypads on ATM's and banks before and after each use.
  • Gas pumps are probably the dirtiest and easiest way for germs and bacteria to transfer, so wipe down and use a cloth/wipe to grab the gas nozzle and sanitize the keypads.
  • Try your best to avoid cash money transactions. Money is very dirty and is not being sanitized when received. If possible, use touch-less payments such as Apple/Samsung pay. If paying by card, make sure you are disinfecting when finished.
  • If you are going out to buy food or any household products in general, many big name-brand businesses, such as HEB or Walmart, offer delivery and curbside services for free during these hard times! There are many options you could go through if your restaurant or store does not deliver, such as Uber Eats, Door Dash, and many more. There are also many similar apps that allow you to order your groceries and other products online and have them delivered right at your door without making any contact with the delivery person.
  • Remove your shoes and disinfect them before entering your home if you got down at any place. Shoes can carry a lot of bacteria and possible contaminates into your home so it is best to sanitize them before entering back into an already disinfected home.

By taking these precautions, we can easily decrease the amount of COVID-19 cases throughout our community. In times like these, being a selfless person is what is going to help control the spread of
COVID-19. We must work together and do our part to keep not only ourselves safe, but all of our loved ones as well.

If you or anyone in your household has any of the following COVID-19 symptoms, call a doctor first before going in person! Call 911 in case of an emergency.

"Slow Down and Move Over" - Important Laws

2/12/2020

Comments

The "Slow Down and Move Over" order is a very significant law originating in South Carolina, when an emergency responder was found guilty after being struck by a passing vehicle while on the shoulder of the road. The victim fought hard for laws that will better protect all emergency responders when on the road. In 1996, approximately two years after the incident, South Carolina passed the "Move Over" law and shortly afterwards, all 50 states followed in passing the law.

It is crucial for the safety of our community that we remain aware of the road in case of an emergency. Accidents like these can be avoided by simply paying more attention and being considerate.
Picture
The law states that motorist must slow down their speed and move over to another lane when they see any police, fire responders, or any other emergency vehicles, including tow trucks, with their lights flashing. All drivers must reduce their speed by 20 MPH on any/all highways and reduce up to 5 MPH on regular streets while passing.
Penalties- Any drivers who fail to slow down or move can get fined up to $2,000 and receive a moving violation. If the driver injures anyone on the side of the road, the consequences may result in a different manner.

Prevention- While this law applies to emergency vehicles and workers, drivers should remain aware of other vehicles on the road at all times. Whenever you see a vehicle on the curb of the road, slow down or change lanes, if safe to do so. If you are having complications with your vehicle and must pull over to the side, try to station yourself as far as possible from traffic. While exiting your vehicle, exit through the side closest to the curb, that way you can avoid oncoming traffic. If you cannot exit through the other side, look out for any moving cars and wait for them to pass to avoid being hit.

Reasons to Consider Buying a Vehicle from a Tow Company

2/3/2020

Comments

Finding a used vehicle may seem like a challenging task, but there are many reliable ways to find a suitable used vehicle for your budget and needs. One of the best ways to look for a used vehicle is a towing company auction and lien sale. Typically the vehicles that are on sale, are the vehicles that were impounded but have not been claimed or have been left behind. The majority of the time, you will find better prices and vehicles in better condition at towing companies rather than at used car lots.

Following are 5 reasons to consider purchasing your next used vehicle from a towing company auction and lien sale:

1. It's a Great Way to Save Money-
This is the number one benefit of purchasing from tow lots. At a tow auction or tow yard, it is almost guaranteed that you will find a cheaper price than at a dealership. If you are on a tight budget, you might want to check out tow yards or auctions for your next vehicle!

2. Most Vehicles are in Great Condition-
The majority of the time, the reason vehicles stay behind at tow lots, is because tow fees can be pretty expensive and not everyone has the funds to take their vehicle out and because of this, many of the cars that are for sale, are in good condition. They even have cars that are not in such great shape for those looking for cars to rebuild or for a younger driver.

3. Wide Selection of Vehicles-
Most people are surprised at the variety of vehicles on auction at a lien sale, with various makes and models available. Some are newer while others are a bit dated, but this just means there is a vehicle to suit all tastes and budgets. Typical brands found at lien sales include Ford, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, BMW, and Mercedes, although it’s possible to find virtually any brand depending on your luck.

4. Not Everyone Knows About these Car Sales-
Not everyone knows about the car sales, therefore, there will be less people, making more options open for you. Less competition means better selections. Or maybe you are the type of person that dislikes pushy salesmen or having to wait to be serviced. By visiting a tow lot or attending an auto auction sale, you will avoid those problems. Contact your local tow companies to find out when their next auto auction is. If they do not host any auctions, they may have a few vehicles for sale, so you may want to ask for that as well.

6 Steps to Jump-Starting a Vehicle Safely & Properly

1/28/2020

Comments

Before attempting to jump start a vehicle, quickly check your engine for the following to ensure it is safe to begin.
  • Damage to the battery (leaks or corrosion) Do not jump start a vehicle if this is the case, instead contact an auto-repair specialist.
  • Electronics and lights are turned off, and the vehicle's keys are out of the ignition.
  • Remove any metal devices/objects that are near or touching the battery or broken parts to avoid sparks.
  • No naked flames are visible.
  • Ensure that you/anyone else around is NOT smoking.

Steps
  1. Ensure that both vehicles are in neutral or in park, both ignitions are off, and make sure that the jumper cables can reach both engines.
  2. Grab the red cable (+) and attach one end to the positive terminal on your vehicle's car battery, followed by attaching it to the same terminal on the working battery. These terminals can be easily identified by the POS or +  signs on the battery.
  3. Grab the black cable and attach it to the negative terminal on the working battery.
  4. Grab that same black cable and attach it to the other end to a metal material that is not close to the battery.
  5. Turn the engine on for the working car and let it run for a while, allowing the battery to charge.
  6. Attempt to start your own vehicle.

Reminder! If your vehicle does start again, keep your vehicle running for about 15 minutes or more before turning off your vehicle.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR VEHICLE STILL WON'T START:

If your vehicle does not turn on, go ahead and check that all of the wires and connections are secure and in place. If everything is secure, try one more time or allow the working engine to run for 5-10 minutes before attempting again.
Now, if you have attempted various times and your vehicle still does not turn on, the probability of needing a new battery is high and you might need to contact an auto-repair specialist.
Next time you need to jump start your vehicle, follow these six easy steps and your car will be running in no time!

Tips for Driving in the Rain

10/15/2019

Comments

When it rains, roads usually become flooded and slippery making it hard to navigate your vehicle through the water. Rainy conditions make an average driver more dangerous than usual, leading to more accidents on the roads. Even though we cannot control the weather, we can, however, take some extra precautions while driving that will reduce the risk of an accident.
Here are some tips that will make driving in the rain a safer experience.
Picture
1. Slow Down

Being mindful of the road conditions is very important, especially during the rain. Roads often become wet, making the road very slick and unsafe. If you are driving during the rain, it is recommended that you drive slower, under the speed limit. When you slow down your driving, you will gain more control and stability, making it easier and safer for you and other drivers around.

2. Lights

Being able to see the road and other cars is a major problem for when driving in the rain. So, it is recommended that you use the correct lights on your car to make the road more visible. In some circumstances, using your fog lights are the best option, while in other situations, your high beams work best when trying to see upcoming surroundings. Test out the various types of lights your car has, and use whichever allows you to be able to see better.

3. Turning

While driving on a straight road in the rain may seem safe at normal speeds, but when it comes to curves on the road or any turns, it's a completely different story. It is best and also recommended to slow down as you make a turn. This will minimize the risk of your car sliding while making the turn.

4. Windshields

If you are about to drive in rainy weather, make sure to prepare your car before driving. Using a rain-repellent on your windshield can help get rid of the rain from you view. In order to clear any dirt or debris coming from the rain, keeping your windshield wiper fluid full is recommended. Keeping up with your car maintenance will have you prepared for most driving conditions.

5. Pulling Over

Driving in a normal rainstorm may not be so difficult for some people, driving during a violent storm will be. If the road conditions are too harsh and your visibility is too poor, the best option would be to pull over. By knowing when to pull over, you are prevent/reduce the risk of any potential accidents from occuring.
Roads in rainy weather have a great potential for danger. If you are planning on driving in the rain, stay focused on the roads and keep these few tips in mind. The more careful you are, the safer you will be.

Here at C&A Towing, we highly promote and value safe driving. Keep us in mind the next time you need any services performed!

Common Reasons Your Car Won't Start and What to Check

10/1/2019

Comments

Whenever a car breaks down, it usually happens at the most unfortunate of times. Whether its leaving your car parked and coming back to it unable to start, or even at your home, it is always inconvenient, especially if you have do not know the cause or what to check for.

Here are some of the most common reasons your car won't start, and what to check first.

1. No Fuel:
Not having fuel in your car gas tank surprisingly happens to more people than you would think. Often times, it is easy to forget to put gas in your car or to even be monitoring the fuel level. Many people panic when their vehicles won't start and they assume it is the worst scenario, when in reality the answer is right in front of them; an empty gas tank. Checking your fuel gauge prior to driving can prevent this from happening.
2. Starter: The starter is usually at fault for your car not starting for those cars who do not have a dead battery. If you think that your car does not start due to the starter, you can check by listening for a clicking sound when turning the keys. If the noise is present, the starter is at fault and is more than likely broken.
3. Dead Battery: The most common reason why cars do not start, is due to a faulty car battery. Checking to see if your car battery is dead is fairly simple to do. Start by checking under the hood and listen for a clicking noise when starting the engine. Keep in mind, clicking but not cranking in the engine can be a sign of electrical issues. A different way to check for a dead battery is by trying to use your windshield wipers, automatic windows, or even your radio. If your battery is dead, these connections will not function. To fix a dead battery, one can often use a jump start, but most of the times you need to get towed to an auto repair shop.
4. Ignition Switch: If you know for sure that your car battery is not dead, try checking the ignition switch. All you need to do is check a feature where the battery is needed to work- for example, turning on your headlights. In some cases, the battery is working, but the car still won't start, then there's a problem with the ignition switch.
5. Fuel Filter: Sometimes when a fuel filter is clogged, it prevents gas from reaching to the engine, therefore, not allowing your car to start. If you have already checked everything, try considering to check the fuel filter. Fuel filters are supposed to be changed every 10,000 miles. By keeping up with your car maintenance, you are preventing numerous of issues from occurring.

Next time your car breaks down, follow these few tips to better get an idea of that the problem is. If the problem is neither of these, it would be best to get roadside assistance or be towed to a shop.

How to Avoid Tire Blowouts

9/24/2019

Comments

The most common reason for a breakdown on the road is having a tire blowout. This can be dangerous especially if you are driving on an expressway or a busy road. Having to stop and change your tire can be very stressful and difficult when not everyone knows how to change a tire. Most of the times it is easier to just call a tow truck for roadside assistance and have them either change your tire for you or to tow your car to the nearest tire shop. However, being able to prevent a tire blowout from even happening in the first place, will not only save you money, but will help your tires last way longer.

Avoid tire blowouts in the future with these few tire maintenance tips! Prevention is key!
1. Monitor the Tire Pressure: Having the correct tire pressure is probably the most effective way to preventing tire blowouts. The correct tire pressure makes it less likely for your tire to fail. If you do not know the idle tire pressure for your tires, checking your vehicle guide will tell you where and how to find the pressure recommended for your each of your tires. You can also take your vehicle to a tire shop or mechanic to check your tires for you for little to no cost at all. Tires lose pressure naturally over time, so it is important to check them every so often to prevent any problems.
2. Avoid Over/Under Inflating: Some people tend to make the mistake of noticing their low pressure and over inflating or often not inflating enough. If you over inflate your tires, it can cause the rubber in your tire to overly expand, thus making your tire blowout. On the contrary, under inflating your tire can lead to overheating on the tire's surface leading to a blowout.
3. Avoid Overloading: Carrying a overly heavy load on your vehicle can definitely affect your tires. Not everyone is aware how excessive weight on the vehicle can really weigh it down and create an additional strain on your tires. Always consider the maximum weight capacity before loading your car with heavy items because when the weight becomes too much, one or more tires may blowout mid-trip. So whenever loading your car, be mindful of the weight in order to avoid a blowout.
4. Avoid Excessive Speeding: Many people do not know that driving excessively fast can sometimes lead to a blowout. Whenever a car is moving fast, tires are more prone to blowouts due to any debris on the road that you may have not seen, as well as your tires overheating. Driving at a high speed can also lead to tire pressure loss due to the friction of the road. So be sure to drive safe and maintain a decent speed to reduce any risks of tire blowouts.

There are plenty of other ways to prevent tire blowouts, but these are the most common and effective out of all of them.

Here at C&A Towing, we always promote safe driving and want to ensure that all of our customers are well prepared for any incident.

Safe Places to Wait for Roadside Assistance

9/17/2019

Comments

Getting stranded on road can be a tough and stressful situation that happens when you least expect it. Although it's a common occurrence, most of the times drivers are not prepared to deal with this type of emergency. Regardless the reason on why you are stranded, it is still very important to stay safe while waiting for roadside assistance.

Here are a few of the safest places to wait for roadside assistance.
  • The Right Shoulder of the Road -
Most roads and highways have a shoulder on the side that people are allowed to use whenever there is an emergency. If/when you are stranded, it is advised, if you are still able to accelerate, to move onto the shoulder area so that way you are not blocking the road. Some drivers might not even notice that you are stranded and fail to move out of the way, which can cause a bad accident to occur. Moving to the right shoulder reduces the risk of getting hit by other cars and ending up with more damage than initially started.

  • Inside the Car -
In some circumstances, staying inside your car while stranded can be the safest place to wait for roadside assistance. Unless your car engine is smoking or if your car has overheated, staying in your car with your seatbelt on is highly recommended.  Remember that vehicles are more visible than you are, so staying in your car, can keep you from any further damage. Remaining in your car is important in case you are stranded during nighttime, bad weather conditions such as storms, or even unsafe/unfamiliar places. If it is safe to remain in your car while waiting for roadside assistance to arrive, keep your doors locked and try not to draw attention to yourself or your vehicle because it may lure people who can take advantage of the situation to steal from you or even harm you.

  • Away from the Traffic -
If your vehicle breaks down on any busy road or highway and it is safe to get out of the vehicle, exit through the passenger side, making you further away from traffic. Remain near your vehicle, unless you begin walking towards a car shop, etc.. and try not to get in the way of any oncoming traffic. If you do decide to go find help for any reason, be careful when walking by the road or even crossing it. During nighttime, try to make yourself visible with any fluorescent clothing or items so that way passing cars can clearly see you and move out of the way.
Getting stranded can become a very frustrating situation to be in and calling roadside assistance is probably the best option to take. While waiting for the assistance to arrive, staying safe is very important.

Ways to Avoid Getting Distracted While Driving

9/10/2019

Picture

Driving on the road can be an intricate task to undertake especially when there is a large number of different interferences occurring all around us. Over time, distracted driving has led to numerous amounts of accidents, fatalities, and injuries on roads. It is important to remember and recognize the significance of driving safely, free from distractions. Many drivers participate in various everyday activities that are not meant to be done while behind the wheel. The majority of the time, these activities lead to distracted and immensely unsafe driving. In order to better protect yourself and others while driving, an understanding of what not to do while behind the wheel is crucial. Here are some tips to avoid getting distracted while driving.

There are 3 main types of distractions that many do not know about. These main categories are as follows:

1. Visual Distractions: Visual distractions are by far the most common types of distractions. Anything that takes the drivers eyes off the road is considered a visual distraction. How to avoid getting visually distracted:  Keeping and remaining your eyes on the road is a key element to prevent yourself from daydreaming and from not paying attention to the road . Silencing your cell phone is a great way to relieve yourself of looking over any calls, texts, emails, or any social media notifications.

        2. Manual Distractions: Manual distractions occur whenever the driver physically takes his/her hands off of the steering wheel. By not having your hands on the wheel, you are minimizing your time to react to any sudden changes on the road. Manual distractions can lead to reckless driving and can actively downturn your ability to steer.
How to avoid manual distractions: Try not to change or mess with the radio station/music devices while driving unless you are completely stopped. Avoid using picking your phone up to answer and calls, texts, or any different notifications. Eating and drinking while driving can cause you to become distracted and not pay attention to your surroundings, so it is best to avoid doing that.

3. Cognitive Distractions: This type of distraction keeps the drivers mind from focusing on driving. Usually many people can confess that they recall times when you do not remember the last couple of minutes while on the road. That is a perfect example on how cognitive distractions can impact drivers. Cognitive distractions include using hands-free devices, talking on the phone/ other passengers, daydreaming, listening to the radio, and so on. In order to avoid these distractions, remind yourself that safety is first, silence cell phones and try not to get distracted in conversation if there are others in the car. Another tip to follow is to make sure the music playing is music you enjoy so that way you are not distracted while trying to find what to play.
